System x3650 CPU and Memory Replacement

System x3650 CPU and Memory Replacement

⚠️ Safety First

  • Power off the server and disconnect all power cords.
  • Wait at least 30 seconds to discharge residual power.
  • Wear an ESD wrist strap or ground yourself to prevent static damage.

1. Preparation

  1. Back up all critical data before servicing.
  2. Label cables and connections for easier reassembly.
  3. Ensure you have:
    • Compatible CPU(s) and heatsink(s) for x3650.
    • Supported DIMMs (correct type, speed, and rank).
    • Thermal grease (for CPU replacement).
    • Phillips screwdriver.

2. Remove the Server Cover

  1. Unlock any security latch (if present).
  2. Press the cover release button(s).
  3. Slide and lift off the top cover.

3. CPU Replacement

  1. Locate the processor socket(s) on the system board.
  2. If replacing an existing CPU:
    • Remove the heatsink by loosening the screws in a diagonal pattern.
    • Lift it carefully; clean off old thermal grease from the heatsink with isopropyl alcohol.
    • Unlock the CPU retention latch and remove the CPU.
  3. Install the new CPU:
    • Align the CPU with the socket (look for the triangle marker).
    • Place it gently into the socket without force.
    • Lock the CPU retention mechanism.
  4. Apply a thin, even layer of thermal grease on top of the CPU.
  5. Reinstall the heatsink:
    • Align it properly.
    • Tighten screws in a diagonal cross pattern to ensure even pressure.

4. Memory (RAM) Replacement

  1. Locate the DIMM slots (often labeled near the sockets).
  2. To remove memory:
    • Press down the retaining clips at both ends of the DIMM.
    • Lift the DIMM out carefully.
  3. To install new memory:
    • Align the notch in the DIMM with the slot key.
    • Press firmly down until both clips snap into place.
  4. Follow the memory population guidelines in the x3650 documentation:
    • Typically install DIMMs in matched pairs.
    • Fill slots in the recommended sequence (e.g., 1–3–5, then 2–4–6).

5. Reassembly & Testing

  1. Reinstall the system cover.
  2. Reconnect power and cables.
  3. Power on the server.
  4. Enter BIOS/UEFI or IMM/POST diagnostics to confirm CPU and memory are detected correctly.
  5. Check system logs for any hardware errors.
